O câncer se caracteriza como um complexo fenômeno biológico, oriundo de sucessivas mutações genéticas, capaz de vencer o equilíbrio dos mecanismos de defesa e vigilância celulares e moleculares, sendo, atualmente, considerado uma das doenças mais preocupantes para a humanidade. Somente nos Estados Unidos, mais de 1,66 milhões de pessoas e mais de 4,2 milhões de cães são diagnosticados com câncer anualmente. 

A doença se tornou a principal causa de morte em cães, devido ao aumento da expectativa de vida associado a avanços em nutrição animal, além de prevenção, controle e tratamento de doenças infecciosas e parasitárias. 

As imunoterapias surgem como uma nova abordagem, cujo objetivo é potencializar a resposta imune contra neoformações, aumentando a qualidade ou quantidade de células efetoras do sistema imune, promovendo a exposição de novos antígenos que possam ser detectados e/ou eliminando mecanismos de imunossupressão promovidos por células tumorais.
